Book IV: Sleeping Annihilation
What Lies Remains Laying:
Thomas threw his limbs in every direction humanly possible. What did that even mean, humanly? He couldnât spend time thinking over this. His lungs filled with dark bitter water that split him open like a thousand piercings knives ripping through his tender cold flesh. His eyes burned with the saltwater all around him. There was a crushing sense of dread as wave after wave further disoriented his sense of direction. He had no idea which way was up, and which way was down. Every rotation of his eyes only brought him to the utter terror that was the incandescing darkness around him. Now he felt his stomach quench and do flips. As if his body turning over on itself wasnât bad enough. Through sheer luck or some horrible fate, he found himself thrusted above the surface of the black waters. He felt pelting rain beating down on his face, but it was a welcomed discomfort to drowning. He did not know where he would swim as he was continuously tossed side to side in the raging living body of turmoil, but he did know by the sound of the screaming wind that this was nothing to become happy about. He tried to open his eyes, and maybe it had been the salt water or the rain currently coming down like hellfire, but he could not see a single thing. He was forced to let go of any notion of trying to find a certain direction and just swim in a direction period. He began to stroke through the water, trying not to swallow as the salty vomit attempted to force its way through his lips. His swimming seemed fruitful if only for a while. When there is only darkness and storm time is almost non-existent. He swam for what seemed like forever and he came to believe he had put up as good a fight as he could be proud to have put up. He slowly allowed his tired muscles to relax and the waves to grab his shoulders and back. They flung him to and fro, the sharpness of the salty tips scratching his flesh and invading his throat as he desperately tried to find breaths in between the onslaught of liquid punches. He then felt broken shells and soft sand beneath his toes.
As the waters tried to drag him back out and he was sucked back under the lightless depths, he dug his toes deep into the miscellaneous surface and thrust himself forward. He could feel the bits of rock and shell cut his feet clean open in a thousand places, but he did not care. He knew that if he could feel the bottom then the water was surely getting shallow. Anything he could stand in would be a saving grace from God himself. Not like he would save him even if he could. Thomas gasped, sucking in what seemed like gallons of the putrid matter around him as he rampaged forward with unrelenting passion.
